Top 5 Tips To Help You Feel Better This Winter

December 3, 2014 by Hannah Cox Leave a Comment

Avoiding illness throughout the winter months can be hard especially with ever changing temperatures! Outside is cold and rainy whilst shops and offices are pumping out heat like you’re in a sauna. This constant fluctuation confuses your body and often leaves one feeling under the weather. Crowded streets and transport result in close proximity to potential carriers. So what can you do about it?

Tips To Avoid Illness

  • Don’t be afraid to move away from the person who is coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose.
  • Wrap up with layers. It’s better to be hot, as you can remove layers, than be caught cold with nothing to put on.
  • Stay hydrated – drink lots of water. Just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean you should neglect your fluids.
  • Don’t get caught in the rain – take an umbrella with you or ensure you at least have a hood on your coat.
  • Consider getting a flu jab if you know you get ill a lot. It doesn’t cost much and can really help you get through winter unscathed.
  • Wash your hands with soap often and make sure you dry them well – germs love wet environments!
  • If your feet get wet, change out of your wet socks and shoes as soon as you can. This is one of the quickest ways to catch a chill.

Tips To Help You Feel Better

Hopefully, you won’t get ill this winter, however, if you do feel unwell, I can highly recommend the following which all helped me recover and feel better…

1.)  Hot water with lemon

IMG_1035You must drink lots of water. This cup of comfort will warm you up and will help you feel better. A freshly squeezed lemon in hot water is just lovely and is packed with vitamin c and antioxidants. For a touch of sweetness, try coconut palm sugar.

2.)  Detox bath with salts

A hot bath, with detoxifying salts, feels wonderful and relaxing. The aromatherapy oils add to this relaxation and will encourage you to breathe deeply, helping to clear your sinuses.

3.)  Rest

Quite simply, the best remedy when you’re feeling unwell is to rest. Curl up in bed or grab the duvet and snuggle on the couch with your favourite bear or with a hot water bottle, for those too cool to have a bear! I’m not cool. My bear was comforting, supportive and an excellent listener!

4.)  Soups and Smoothies

You may not feel like eating, but you must try. Soup and smoothies are a perfect way to get your 5 a day and help you feel better. They are kind to your throat which can often feel sore when you’re unwell. Try to take a multi-vitamin too. This will help to boost your immune system.

5.) Wrap up warm and go for a walk

When you are feeling better, go for a walk as it’s beautiful out there. However, avoid the rain and make sure you wrap up with layers! Your first walk, after a few duvet-days, should be short as you’ll probably feel a little light headed and tired.

I know it may take some persuasion to pull yourself out from under the warmth and protection of your duvet, but the fresh air will feel wonderful.

Get Well Soon. x

*Health Advice: Whilst these top 5 tips to help you feel better this winter helped me overcome a cold and chest infection, please do seek the advice and counsel of a doctor when you feel unwell.
