TRIED & TESTED // Agua De Madre Kefir Water

June 12, 2021 by Lizzy Silverton Leave a Comment

If you are looking for a delicious, low alcohol drink, packed with live probiotics this summer, Agua De Madre kefir water may be for you.

What is Kefir Water?

Kefir water is made by fermenting a ‘mother culture’ of bacteria from the Mexican Opuntia cactus and yeast with organic natural fruits and ginger. The drink is very low in alcohol, it is organic, vegan and packed with live cultures – 55 billion per 100ml in fact. This multitude of bacteria contributes to maintaining good gut health; the more diverse strains of bacteria in your microbiome, the healthier you are.

Flavourful and not too sweet

Agua De Madre comes in a variety of flavours – ginger, blood orange bitters, pomegranate and hibiscus, and elderflower and apple.

The new blood orange bitters flavour has been developed with Camille Vidal, founder of La Maison Wellness and creator of Mindful Cocktails.

Vidal comments:

‘I want to inspire the world to bring mindfulness into the glass. Agua de Madre is not only a delicious drink but is packed full of

health benefits. The flavour we have created is wonderful to add into a cocktail as well as drinking by itself, brunch, lunch or as a Mindful aperitif!’

The bitters drink is really flavourful – a great alternative to an Aperol Spritz, and not too sweet. The sugar content is actually 3.4gr per 100ml when the bottle is capped, but as the drink is ‘live’ the sugar continues to metabolise into a natural trace low-alcohol and a reduced level per 100ml. It is also naturally sparkling and not carbonated.

I also sampled the ginger, pepper and turmeric shot, which blew my head off… in a good way!

Alcohol content

Agua De Madre contains trace amounts of alcohol as a result of the natural process of fermenting fruits and organic sugar with a live mother culture. It is 1.2% ABV on average.

Final thoughts

I’m always on the lookout for tasty low alcohol or alcohol free alternatives, especially those that don’t leave you feeling like you’ve filled up on sugar. I really enjoyed the drinks from Agua De Madre – they were light, refreshing and zesty with a lovely subtle bitterness.
